Iconic Japanese watches engineered for shock resistance, water resistance, outdoor use, sports, everyday durability, and extreme environments.
G-SHOCK is Casio's rugged watch brand, launched in Japan in 1983 with the DW-5000C. Created by engineer Kikuo Ibe and Project Team Tough, G-SHOCK transformed the wristwatch by making impact resistance the foundation of its design. Today the range includes classic digital 5600 models, analog-digital GA-2100 watches, Master of G professional tools, fitness-focused G-SQUAD models, Full Metal watches, MT-G, and the premium Japanese-made MR-G collection.
G-SHOCK is a Japanese watch brand created by Casio and launched in 1983 with the original DW-5000C. The concept began when Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe set out to create a wristwatch that could survive severe impacts instead of behaving like the delicate watches common at the time.
Development began with Project Team Tough in 1981. Over approximately two years, the team built and tested more than 200 prototypes before arriving at the shock-resistant structure that became the foundation of G-SHOCK.
The original development concept became known as the Triple 10: the goal was a watch capable of surviving a 10-meter drop, offering 10-bar water resistance, and operating for 10 years on a battery. The first DW-5000C ultimately exceeded part of that target by providing 20-bar water resistance.
Shock resistance remains the defining characteristic of every G-SHOCK. Casio has continued developing protective case structures, cushioning systems, carbon-reinforced components, mud resistance, vibration resistance, and specialized constructions designed for demanding environments.
The 5000 and 5600 series preserve the square digital shape associated with the original 1983 watch. Modern versions range from straightforward resin digital watches to solar-powered, Bluetooth-connected, and full-metal interpretations of the classic design.
The 2100 series, introduced in 2019, became another major G-SHOCK design family. Its slim octagonal case combines analog hands with digital functions, while later versions added Tough Solar charging, Bluetooth connectivity, stainless steel, and premium metal construction.
Master of G represents the brand’s professional and outdoor-oriented range. The family includes Rangeman watches for outdoor navigation and field use, Mudmaster and Mudman models designed for dusty and muddy environments, Gravitymaster aviation-inspired watches, and Frogman professional dive watches.
Selected Rangeman and other advanced G-SHOCK models incorporate GPS, optical heart-rate monitoring, altimeters, barometers, compasses, thermometers, accelerometers, and other sensors for training and outdoor activities.
Frogman models occupy a special place within G-SHOCK. Unlike most standard G-SHOCK watches, which commonly provide 200-meter water resistance, Frogman models are designed as professional dive watches and meet ISO requirements for 200-meter diving.
G-SHOCK also offers G-SQUAD fitness watches. Depending on the model, these can include step tracking, heart-rate monitoring, GPS, workout analysis, smartphone connectivity, and other training functions while retaining the shock-resistant construction associated with the brand.
Tough Solar technology is widely used across higher-specification G-SHOCK collections. Solar-powered models convert light into electrical energy, reducing dependence on regular battery replacement. Bluetooth Smartphone Link and Multi Band 6 radio-controlled timekeeping are also available on many advanced models.
The Full Metal collection applies G-SHOCK’s shock-resistant engineering to stainless steel and titanium watches. The GMW-B5000, introduced in 2018, translated the original square G-SHOCK design into full metal while adding modern technologies such as Bluetooth connectivity and solar power.
At the top of the collection is MR-G, the flagship G-SHOCK line. MR-G watches are produced at Casio’s premium manufacturing facilities in Japan and use materials such as titanium, sapphire crystal, advanced titanium alloys, and highly finished metal components. The collection combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with G-SHOCK’s electronic technology and shock-resistant engineering.
Current G-SHOCK prices cover an unusually broad range. Basic resin models can cost below $100, popular 5600 and GA-2100 watches generally occupy the roughly $100-$200 range, Full Metal and Master of G watches extend into several hundred or more than $1,000, while special MR-G models can approach $10,000.
Price Range: $89.95 - $9,500+

G-SHOCK is Casio's rugged watch brand, created in Japan and launched in 1983. It is known for shock-resistant construction, strong water resistance, practical digital and analog functions, and watches designed for demanding everyday and professional use.
G-SHOCK watches are made by Casio, the Japanese electronics and watch company. G-SHOCK is one of Casio's major watch brands.
The first G-SHOCK was the DW-5000C, released in 1983 after approximately two years of development by Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe and Project Team Tough.
G-SHOCK watches use specialized shock-resistant structures designed to protect the internal module from impacts and vibration. Depending on the model, Casio also uses reinforced resin, carbon, metal, mud-resistant structures, and additional protective technologies.
G-SHOCK watches are water resistant rather than permanently waterproof. Most current models provide 200-meter water resistance, while Frogman watches are ISO-rated professional dive watches suitable for diving to their specified limits.
The square 5600 family and the octagonal GA-2100 series are two of G-SHOCK's most recognizable and widely sold collections. The 5600 traces its design directly to the original G-SHOCK, while the GA-2100 has become a modern brand icon.
Casio is the parent company and produces many different watch collections. G-SHOCK is Casio's dedicated rugged-watch brand, focused specifically on shock resistance, durability, water resistance, and sport or outdoor functionality.
Many G-SHOCK watches use Casio's Tough Solar technology, but not every model is solar powered. Entry-level models may use conventional replaceable batteries, while many advanced 5600, 2100, Master of G, Full Metal, MT-G, and MR-G watches offer solar charging.
MR-G is the flagship premium line within G-SHOCK. MR-G models use high-end materials such as titanium and sapphire crystal, more elaborate finishing, advanced technology, and Japanese premium manufacturing while retaining G-SHOCK shock resistance.
Current G-SHOCK watches start below $100 for basic digital models, while mainstream models usually cost around $100 to several hundred dollars. Master of G, Full Metal, MT-G, and MR-G watches cost substantially more, with special MR-G models reaching approximately $9,500.
