Effy Watches

Effy Watches combine Swiss watchmaking with the bold gemstone design language of New York jewelry house Effy Jewelry.

The parent company was founded in 1979 by Effy Hematian, an engineer-turned-jewelry designer who became known for colorful gemstones, sculptural forms, animal motifs, and diamond-intensive fine jewelry.

Hematian’s engineering background also created an early interest in watchmaking.

The first dedicated Effy Watches collection was officially launched in 2004 at the JCK Show in Las Vegas. The original range combined Swiss movements and components with stainless steel, sapphire crystals, diamonds, colored gemstones, and fashion-forward case designs.

Those early watches were intended to function as stand-alone luxury products rather than simply jewelry accessories.

The watch line was available only for a limited period before disappearing from the market.

Nearly two decades later, the Hematian family revived the concept.

The modern Effy Watches collection was relaunched around 2023 as a new interpretation of the company’s jewelry heritage. Rather than creating a conventional watch brand separate from Effy Jewelry, the family deliberately connects the watches to recognizable Effy motifs, gemstones, and design themes.

All current Effy watches are Swiss Made.

The brand states that its timepieces are manufactured or assembled in Switzerland under Swiss standards for quality, precision, and craftsmanship.

The current collection uses both Swiss quartz and Swiss automatic movements.

Quartz models form an important part of the jewelry-watch range because they provide accurate, low-maintenance timekeeping while allowing the visual focus to remain on diamonds, sapphires, mother-of-pearl, and elaborate dial designs.

Effy states that battery life varies by caliber, with some quartz movements providing approximately 40 months and others considerably longer.

Automatic watches provide a more mechanical alternative.

Several current models use skeletonized Swiss automatic movements that expose gears, bridges, springs, and the balance through the dial. These watches are especially important because they connect Effy’s jewelry design with visible traditional watch mechanics.

A current 41mm stainless steel automatic skeleton watch provides one of the most accessible entries into the collection.

Other skeleton models use larger 42mm cases, diamonds, PVD coatings, silicone straps, or lightweight titanium construction.

Titanium plays an important role in Effy’s sportier automatic watches.

Current 42mm titanium skeleton watches combine Swiss automatic movements with lightweight titanium cases, silicone straps, and approximately 50 to 100 meters of water resistance depending on the reference.

Selected versions use black PVD coatings to create a more contemporary appearance while increasing surface resistance to wear.

One of the collection’s most distinctive technical details is Effy’s diamond-cut sapphire crystal.

Rather than using a conventional flat or domed sapphire, selected skeleton watches feature sapphire crystal cut with diamond-inspired kite-shaped facets around the outer edge.

The treatment makes the protective crystal part of the visual design of the watch rather than simply a transparent cover over the dial.

This idea reflects Effy’s jewelry background particularly well: a familiar watchmaking material is treated almost like a gemstone.

Sapphire crystal is widely used throughout the collection and provides significantly greater scratch resistance than conventional mineral glass.

The jewelry-focused models are where Effy becomes particularly distinctive.

Instead of treating gemstones merely as hour markers or simple bezel decoration, many watches borrow directly from the company’s established jewelry designs.

The Signature Panther is one of the clearest examples.

The panther has appeared in Effy Hematian’s jewelry for more than four decades and has become one of the company’s most recognizable motifs.

Current Panther watches reproduce the animal through diamonds and gemstones, sometimes using tsavorite stones for the eyes and black or white diamonds across the dial.

Both quartz and automatic Panther models are available, ranging from elegant leather-strap watches to black PVD automatic designs.

The animal theme continues with Peacock and Parrot watches.

These pieces combine Swiss movements with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and other colored gemstones to create dials that operate almost like miniature jewelry compositions.

They are less restrained than conventional Swiss dress watches and intentionally emphasize color, symbolism, and decorative craftsmanship.

Effy’s women’s and smaller-format watches push the jewelry concept even further.

Cocktail watches use compact 28mm cases with large quantities of sapphires, tsavorites, diamonds, and other gemstones.

Current versions include blue-sapphire, pink-sapphire, and tsavorite designs with pavé-set bezels and gemstone-covered dials.

Many of these watches use Swiss quartz movements because the mechanical movement is secondary to the jewelry composition.

The Rainbow theme is another important part of the catalog.

Effy regularly works with multicolored gemstones in its jewelry, and the same approach appears in its watches through sapphires, garnets, citrine, peridot, topaz, iolite, amethyst, spinel, and diamonds.

A current 38mm Swiss automatic model uses almost five total carats of multicolored gemstones as hour markers, while other rainbow designs cover the dial and bezel much more extensively.

One of the most elaborate current pieces is the Rainbow Spinning Butterfly Watch.

It combines diamonds and multiple colored gemstones with an animated jewelry-inspired design and sits near the top of the regular Effy watch price range.

Materials vary significantly according to price and design.

Stainless steel is the most common case material, particularly on quartz and automatic models in the lower and middle parts of the collection.

Titanium is used for selected lightweight skeleton watches, while 18K yellow and rose gold appear in higher-end jewelry pieces.

Straps include calf leather, lizard leather, silicone, rubber, nylon, stainless steel, and titanium depending on the model.

Water resistance reflects the jewelry-oriented nature of the collection.

Many diamond and gemstone watches provide approximately 50 meters / 5 ATM, suitable for normal daily exposure to water.

Selected sportier automatic skeleton watches reach approximately 100 meters / 10 ATM.

Effy nevertheless advises owners to treat heavily jeweled watches as fine timepieces rather than professional sports or dive watches.

The company also emphasizes after-sales service.

Watch servicing is handled through Effy’s specialist team at its New York headquarters, and the brand provides a dedicated limited watch warranty. Effy recommends using its own service network rather than third-party repairers because unauthorized service can affect warranty coverage.

The current price structure makes the brand unusual.

Entry-level Swiss automatic skeleton watches begin at approximately $1,495.

Diamond-set automatic models move upward from around $2,000, while gemstone jewelry watches frequently cost $6,000–$10,000.

Current Peacock and Panther models can approach $10,000, and elaborate Rainbow and Butterfly designs reach approximately $12,595 or more.

This makes Effy fundamentally different from mainstream fashion-watch brands.

The watches are not inexpensive products created merely to extend a jewelry logo into another accessory category. The combination of Swiss Made production, sapphire crystals, automatic movements, precious metals, hand-set diamonds, and substantial gemstone weights places the modern collection firmly within the luxury market.

At the same time, Effy is not a traditional high-horology manufacture.

The brand does not promote proprietary in-house calibers, tourbillons, minute repeaters, or vertically integrated movement production. Its expertise lies primarily in jewelry design, gem selection, setting, and the integration of Swiss movements into highly decorative watches.
