About Lip Watches

LIP is a historic French watch brand founded by Emmanuel Lipmann in Besançon in 1867. Today, the company again develops and manufactures its watches in Besançon, combining heritage designs such as Himalaya, Churchill, Nautic-Ski and Mach 2000 with quartz, automatic, meca-quartz and modern LIP R26 mechanical movements.

LIP is one of France’s most historic watch brands. Its story began in 1867, when Emmanuel Lipmann established a small watchmaking workshop in Besançon, a city that remains central to French watchmaking today.

The business later became Lipmann Frères, and the LIP trademark was officially registered in 1908. During the twentieth century, the company developed into one of the most recognizable names in French watchmaking.

After periods of financial difficulty and changes of ownership during the quartz crisis, LIP eventually returned permanently to its Besançon roots. Since 2014, under Société des Montres Bisontines, the brand has rebuilt local development and production in the region.

Today, LIP describes its watches as Made in France in Besançon. Design, assembly, regulation, casing, testing, and quality control are carried out through its French watchmaking operation, while movements and components can originate from France, Switzerland, Japan, and other specialist suppliers depending on the model.

The collection covers a broad range of technologies. LIP uses Swiss Ronda quartz movements, Japanese Miyota and TMI quartz and automatic calibres, hybrid meca-quartz chronographs, Swiss mechanical movements, and its newer proprietary R26 automatic calibre.

Introduced in 2025, the LIP R26 represents an important step in the return of French movement production. Developed with the SupMicroTech engineering school in Besançon, the automatic movement has approximately 42 hours of power reserve and uses components representing more than 70% of its production value from France, particularly the Besançon region.

Current R26 watches include the Type 14, Annapurna, and Nautic 666. These watches sit above the brand’s mainstream quartz and Japanese-powered automatic collections and emphasize renewed French mechanical watchmaking.

The Himalaya is one of LIP’s best-known historical families. Its story is associated with French mountaineers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, who reached the summit of Annapurna in 1950 while wearing LIP watches. Current Himalaya models include quartz, automatic, skeleton, chronograph, and smaller women’s versions.

The rectangular Churchill collection is based on LIP’s historic T18. In 1948, the French government presented an 18-carat gold-plated LIP T18 to Winston Churchill. Modern Churchill watches include quartz T18, T24, C18, C26, and automatic T26 models.

The Nautic-Ski is another major LIP icon. Introduced in 1967 for the company’s centenary, it became the first French watch claimed to offer 200 metres of water resistance and was distinguished by its internal rotating dive bezel.

Current Nautic-Ski and related diving watches preserve this sporting identity with automatic movements, compressor-inspired cases, internal or external timing bezels, and up to 200 metres of water resistance.

The Mach 2000 represents LIP’s strong connection to industrial design. Created in the 1970s by French designer Roger Tallon, its asymmetrical case and colored chronograph pushers remain among the most recognizable designs in the brand’s catalog.

Other current families include Rallye, Général de Gaulle, Dauphine, Henriette, Big TV, Mythic, Nautic 3, Courage, and various special editions. The collection covers men’s, women’s, and unisex watches in both traditional and unconventional case shapes.

LIP was also an important participant in the development of electric watch technology during the twentieth century. In 1952, the company publicly presented an early electric wristwatch project, continuing a long history of technical experimentation alongside its more traditional mechanical watches.

Modern pricing remains broad. Basic quartz watches generally begin around $180 to $250, mainstream automatics typically occupy the $400 to $800 range, R26 models approach or exceed $1,000, and selected automatic chronographs rise toward approximately $1,800 or more.
